Pillar #2: Nutrition

Here’s the one that can be the most confusing for everyone, including me!

Believe me, I have been down just about every rabbit hole there is out there on this one. If anyone tells you there is only one way to eat to reach your optimal health and well being. RUN! We are all an experiment of one, we are all metabolically different. What works for me, or you, may not work for someone else, you have to experiment with yourself, tinker with the margins.

I looked into becoming a Certified Nutritionist or Dietitian but every program I looked at seemed to go against everything I was learning on my own. Here are just a few of the protocols out there: Vegan, Vegetarian, Fruitarian, Pritikin, The Zone, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, South Beach, Atkins, Low Carb, Paleo, Ketogenic, and the list goes on and on.

I can send you dozens of articles or videos of people who gave up meat and became a Vegetarian or Vegan and they thrived. I can also send you the same amount of information of people who tried that same eating protocol and their hair started falling out and they felt like crap. So nutrition is not a one shoe fits all, YOU have to find what works for YOU.

All of the best nutritional plans agree on are the following:

  1. Eliminate Sugar
  2. Eliminate Artificial Sweeteners
  3. Eliminate Processed Foods
  4. Eat REAL food. If it comes in a bag or a box it's probably not REAL food!
  5. Eat as clean as possible, meaning organic fruits and veggies, also organic meats etc.

I will list several great books I read that may help you structure a nutritional plan that may work for you. But first I will tell you what worked for me. I was watching a Ted Talk given by a College Professor — Dr. Terry Wahls. She was diagnosed with stage 2 MS. She had access to the best medicine, doctors, hospitals, etc. She tried everything to no avail. So she decided to go to that great library in the sky called the internet and do her own research. She came upon the Paleo Diet, so she implemented that along with some supplementation CoQ10 and some other things. Online is a picture of her sitting in a wheel chair teaching her college class, a year later she was back taking her Karate class and riding horses. She didn't cure her MS but she made it much more manageable which greatly improved her quality of life.

Hippocrates quote: "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."

My Daily Protocol for Nutrition:

  1. The first thing I do every morning is have a large glass of ice cold water with lemon squeezed in it.
  2. I practice a protocol called Intermittent Fasting. I usually eat 2 meals a day, first one around 12 and dinner around 6. So other than my organic coffee I have in the morning with grass fed butter, coconut oil, cinnamon, and a touch of Stevia, there are no carbs in this so I am not breaking my fast. So my body is fasting almost everyday for 18 hours everyday.
  3. My 2 meals consist of the following: Half of my plate will be mostly dark greens, kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts etc. I loathe veggies so I pour on some of the following, I change it up, but… some melted grass fed butter, coconut oil, olive oil, sea salt, sauteed onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, turmeric any kind of seasoning salts or herbs to give it flavor. 1/4 of my plate will be half of an avocado and the other 1/4 will be some good quality protein: wild salmon, sardines, oysters, organic eggs, grass fed beef, organic chicken etc.
  4. Other things I also eat: 2 scoops of sauerkraut, or kimchi, before every meal. Seaweed, 85% dark chocolate, almond butter, when it comes to fruit, it is usually berries of some type with full fat cream poured over it. Don't really do the bananas, apples, oranges etc. Some types of real cheese and nuts. I also drink a cup of Bone Broth and some Green Tea everyday.
